How to buy from Amazon in Nigeria (2026)

The short answer: Amazon does ship to Nigeria, but only a slice of its catalogue — set Nigeria as your delivery country and most listings return “This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location.” For the rest you need a US or UK address and a forwarder. And for most people the harder problem is not shipping at all: it is getting the payment through. Nigerian banks re-enabled international card use in July 2025, but with spending caps, so a virtual USD card is still the reliable route.

Disclosure: Senda is a shop-and-ship service, so we benefit if you use a forwarder. We have tried to be straight about when you do not need one — if AmazonGlobal will ship your item directly, that is often the simpler option, and we say so below. Costs and card rules verified September 2026.

Step 1: check whether Amazon will ship it at all

Set your delivery country to Nigeria before you do anything else. Add the item to your basket and look at the shipping options. Eligible products show an AmazonGlobal option with an estimated delivery cost and an import-fees deposit; everything else shows the “cannot be shipped” message.

Do that first because it changes the whole plan. If the item is eligible and it is the only thing you want, ship it direct. If it is not — and for electronics, many branded goods and US-only third-party listings it usually is not — you need a different route, and there is no combination of settings that will change the answer.

Why items get blocked

  • Seller shipping policy — the individual seller has restricted which countries it serves. Common on Marketplace listings.
  • Manufacturer distribution agreements — the brand restricts export to protect regional distributors. This is why some well-known electronics never ship.
  • Hazardous materials rules — anything with a large lithium battery, aerosols, flammable liquids or pressurised contents is restricted on passenger aircraft.
  • Nigerian import restrictions — some categories cannot be imported regardless of who is shipping them.

The message you see is identical in all four cases, which is why it is worth knowing the reasons: three of them are the seller’s or the brand’s choice and a forwarder solves them, while the fourth is Nigerian law and nothing solves it.

Step 2: solve the payment, because this is where most orders die

Between 2022 and 2025 Nigerian banks largely suspended international transactions on naira cards, a response to foreign-exchange pressure. That changed in July 2025, when major banks reactivated international use on naira debit cards after roughly three years — reported at the time by Nairametrics and CNBC Africa.

The important detail is that it came back with caps. Reporting at the time put GTBank at roughly USD 1,000 per quarter and First Bank at roughly USD 500 per month, varying by bank and card type. So a naira card may now work on Amazon — until you hit your ceiling, which a single laptop purchase will do.

Even inside your cap, Amazon can still decline you. The usual causes are a billing address that does not match your card record, a card that has international transactions switched off at the app level, or Amazon’s own fraud filters reacting to a first-time Nigerian card. We have written the full diagnosis and fix list in why your naira card gets declined.

The practical answer for anyone ordering more than occasionally is a virtual USD card from a provider that funds in dollars — the payment is processed in USD, so you are not converting at checkout and not depending on your bank to approve a cross-border transaction. Techpoint has a roundup of providers. Pick on reliability with your specific store, not on headline fees.

Step 3: what it actually costs

Two worked examples using Senda’s published rates and the Nigerian charges set out in our customs duties guide. We price by weight rounded up to the next whole kilogram, using whichever is greater of the actual and the volumetric weight — bulky-but-light parcels are charged on their size.

A USD 120 pair of sneakers, 2 kg

LineHow it is worked outAmount
Sneakers (FOB)What you pay the store$120.00
Senda shippingOur published rate for that weight$30.00
CIF valueFOB + freight$150.00
Import duty and taxesCIF is at or below the USD 300 de minimis threshold$0.00
Landed cost1.25x the product price$150.00

CIF of $150.00 sits under the USD 300 de minimis threshold Nigeria introduced in September 2025, so it clears without duty or VAT. This is the single biggest thing to understand about small orders: below that line the customs maths disappears, and you are only paying product plus freight.

A USD 450 clothing order, 5 kg

LineHow it is worked outAmount
Clothing haul (FOB)What you pay the store$450.00
Senda shippingOur published rate for that weight$60.00
CIF valueFOB + freight$510.00
Import duty20% of CIF$102.00
Surcharge7% of the duty$7.14
CISS1% of FOB$4.50
ETLS0.5% of CIF$2.55
VAT7.5% of $626.19$46.96
Landed cost1.50x the product price$673.15

Over the threshold, the full stack applies and the order lands at 1.50x the product price. Note the de minimis allowance is also capped at four importations per person per year, so it is worth taking on the orders where it saves the most rather than the first four that happen to arrive.

Consolidation is where a forwarder earns its fee

If you buy four things separately and ship each one, you pay freight four times and file four customs entries. Sent to one address and combined into a single parcel, you pay one freight charge on the combined weight — and our rate per kilogram falls as weight rises, so 4 kg in one box costs USD 50 against roughly USD 120 for four separate 1 kg parcels.

The trade-off is time: consolidation means waiting for the slowest item before anything ships. If one thing is urgent, send it on its own and consolidate the rest.

What not to try

  • Do not declare a lower value to get under the de minimis threshold. Nigeria Customs said explicitly that the threshold framework comes with enforcement against invoice manipulation, and a reclassified shipment costs far more than the duty avoided.
  • Do not split one order into artificial parcels for the same reason.
  • Do not order restricted categories on the assumption a forwarder will sort it out. If a forwarder tells you a prohibited item will be fine, that is a reason to stop using them — it is your money and goods at risk in a seizure.
  • Do not plan on returning anything. Return shipping from Nigeria usually costs more than the item is worth, so treat every order as final and take sizing seriously.

The short version

  1. Set Nigeria as your delivery country and check whether AmazonGlobal covers the item.
  2. If it does and it is a single item, ship direct.
  3. If it does not, get a US or UK address from a forwarder and have it delivered there.
  4. Sort the payment before you build a basket — virtual USD card if you order regularly.
  5. Keep the CIF value at or under USD 300 where you can, and consolidate where you cannot.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon ship to Nigeria?

Partly. Amazon ships a limited selection of items to Nigeria through AmazonGlobal: set Nigeria as your delivery country and eligible products show an international shipping option and an estimated cost at checkout. Most of the catalogue does not qualify. Electronics, many branded goods and anything sold by a US-only third-party seller typically return "This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location." So the honest answer is that Amazon ships to Nigeria, but usually not the specific thing you want. For everything else you need a US or UK delivery address and a forwarder to bring it the rest of the way.

Why does Amazon say my item cannot be shipped to Nigeria?

Four common reasons, none of which you can argue with at checkout. The seller has restricted which countries it ships to. The manufacturer has a distribution agreement that blocks export. The item is classed as hazardous for air freight — anything with a large lithium battery, aerosols, flammables. Or Nigerian import rules restrict the category. The message is the same in all four cases, so the practical move is to stop trying to make that listing work and instead have it delivered to a US or UK address that a forwarder gives you.

Will my Nigerian card work on Amazon?

Sometimes, and more often than it did. Nigerian banks resumed international transactions on naira debit cards in July 2025 after roughly three years of suspension, but with caps — reporting at the time put GTBank at about USD 1,000 per quarter and First Bank at about USD 500 per month, varying by bank and card. Even within your cap, Amazon can decline on an address mismatch or its own fraud filters. A virtual USD card avoids the cap and the bank approval entirely, which is why most regular shoppers end up using one.

How much does it cost to ship an Amazon order to Nigeria?

Senda prices by weight, rounded up to the next whole kilogram, using whichever is greater of actual and volumetric weight. A 2 kg parcel from the US is USD 30 and a 5 kg parcel is USD 60. On top of that sits Nigerian customs — but only above the USD 300 de minimis threshold. A USD 120 pair of sneakers at 2 kg has a CIF value of USD 150, which is under the threshold, so it clears without duty or VAT. A USD 450 clothing order at 5 kg exceeds it and lands at about 1.50x the product price.

Is it cheaper to use AmazonGlobal or a forwarder?

If the item is eligible for AmazonGlobal and you only want that one item, shipping direct is usually simpler and often cheaper, because you are not paying anyone to receive and re-send it. A forwarder wins in three situations: the item is not eligible at all, you are buying several things and want them consolidated into one parcel and one customs entry, or you want the delivered cost and the customs handling fixed before you pay. Consolidation is the big one — four separate small orders means four lots of freight.
